For nature lovers, the Auvergne, in the heart of the Massif Central, offers an unparalleled spectacle. Sparkling lakes, dormant volcanoes and an exceptional wealth of flora and fauna. The Auvergne is one of the largest unspoilt areas in Europe. Here are our top tips for hiking in the Auvergne.

Day 1: embark on a 4-day hiking holiday in the Auvergne

Let's climb the Puy de Dôme, the highest peak in the Chaîne des Puys! It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Puy de Dôme offers a 360° view of the 80 volcanoes spread over 45 km. This well-preserved and well-developed area is open all year round, and stands at an altitude of 1,465 metres. NB: it is possible to check visibility thanks to two webcams providing up-to-date images.

Day 2: Day two of the ascent continues!

Discover the Puy de Sancy! The highest point in the Massif Central this time. Rising to 1,885 metres, it's one of the best-known hikes in the Auvergne. It overlooks a series of glacial cirques that are home to some exceptional flora and fauna. During the summer season, it can be reached either by cable car or by an 864-step footpath. The summit offers spectacular views of the Dore, Cézallier and Cantal mountains.

Day 3: A must-do hike in the Auvergne

We're continuing our tour of the Auvergne and the Massif Central. Today, we'll be walking on the Puy de Goule. The summit features a bowl-shaped crater surrounded by vegetation-covered slopes. The slopes of the Puy de Goule can be dotted with volcanic rock, an interesting contrast to the green surroundings. The view from the summit can extend to the other volcanoes in the region, providing an impressive natural spectacle.

Day 4: Last stage of the tour

We're coming to the end of your 4-day hiking holiday in the Auvergne. Let's end on a gentle note with a tour of Lac de Servières. Nestling at an altitude of 1,200 metres, it's the perfect getaway for a family day out. This volcanic lake offers a peaceful, unspoilt setting. It's ideal for a relaxing break or a picnic by its calm waters.
