From the pass, we begin a warm-up hike (1h30) towards the Oberaar Berghaus refuge (2330 m), on the shores of the lake of the same name. On the way, we admire the Aar glacier, the third largest in the Alps, framed by the imposing peaks of the Finsteraarhorn, Lauteraarhorn and Schreckhorn.

Our first mountain dinner awaits us in these grandiose surroundings.

Frequently asked questions

I've never done any mountaineering, is this crossing accessible to me?

Yes, this tour is designed for physically fit hikers, even those with no previous mountaineering experience. Before heading out onto the glacier, your guide will explain how to use your crampons and harness. You will always be roped up to ensure your safety.

I hike regularly, but never in the high mountains. Is that enough?

If you're comfortable with 6-8 hour hikes and vertical drops of up to +1300 m / -2200 m, then yes, you're at the right level. The altitude and glacier walking add an extra challenge, but the guide will adapt the pace of the group. If you're in any doubt, a preparatory outing might be a good idea.

Is it possible to hire the necessary mountaineering equipment via Wildhartt?

Yes, you can hire crampons, harness, helmet and ice axe when you book. You can add equipment hire via Wildhartt to your booking before payment.

What should I pack in my bag for this raid?

A 35-litre rucksack is ideal. Here are the essentials: Equipment: mountaineering boots, crampons (if not hired), telescopic poles, harness, helmet, ice axe. Clothing: waterproof jacket and trousers (Gore-Tex type), down jacket, fleece, hat, gloves, sunglasses (cat. 4), thermal clothing and a change of clothes. Accessories: headlamp, sheet-bag, water bottle (min. 1.5 L), sun cream, lip balm, mini first-aid kit. You will receive a complete and exhaustive list when you register.

What are the conditions and comfort like in the mountainhuts?

The mountainhuts are guarded and comfortable, but simple. You will sleep in dormitories, with blankets provided (take a sheet). Sanitary facilities are often shared, and showers are rare or non-existent. The atmosphere is friendly, perfect for sharing a moment with other hikers.

How are meals organised?

All meals are included from the first evening until the last midday (except snacks and drinks in the mountain huts). The mountainhuts offer hot, hearty meals adapted to the effort involved. If you have a special diet, let us know when you register, and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Can I charge my devices in a mountain hut and is there a network?

Yes, you will be able to recharge your devices in the huts, but there are few plug sockets, so remember to take an external battery. As for the network, don't expect much connection. Most of the mountain huts don't have Wi-Fi and the telephone network is very limited on the glacier. The perfect opportunity to really switch off!

Can I privatise this expedition for my group?

Yes, all our expeditions can be privatised for a group already formed, on the dates of your choice.

To make your request, go to the expedition that interests you and click on "Privatise the expedition". We'll take care of the rest!
