After breakfast, the cold-weather gear provided is distributed: boots, gloves, wetsuit, hat... Nothing is left to chance to cope with the Finnmark temperatures. The morning is devoted to meeting the dogs and an introduction to mushing, the art of driving a dog team.

In the afternoon, you set off on your first sled dog loop through the Arctic landscape. At nightfall, return to the lodge for a warm evening and a well-deserved dinner. There is an opportunity to observe the Northern Lights, which are common in the region in winter.

After caring for the dogs and preparing the carriages, you'll set off on a full-day tour of the Varangerbotn nature park. This protected park offers immaculate landscapes, ideal for getting away from it all.

A picnic break is planned in the middle of the day. At the end of the afternoon, we arrive at an isolated refuge where everyone helps with the chores: melting the snow, lighting the fire and feeding the dogs. A simple but convivial evening in the heart of nature.

Do I have what it takes to take part in this expedition?

This expedition is accessible to anyone in good physical shape, even with no previous experience of sled dogs. Our guide Baudouin will be with you all the way, teaching you the basics of mushing and helping you every step of the way. All you need is a desire to experience an adventure in the great outdoors!

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?

The best time to see the Northern Lights in Lapland is from November to March. Between mid-December and mid-February, we're in the polar night period, so there's little time for daylight. Finnmark is the best region in Europe for watching the Northern Lights.

How will my bag be transported during the dog sledding trip?

During the dog sledding expedition, you won't need to carry your own bag. All your personal belongings will be placed in waterproof bags and transported directly onto the sled, along with the equipment needed for the expedition. Each sled is equipped to carry not only your bag, but also all the safety equipment, food for the dogs and participants, as well as additional equipment such as sleeping bags or a change of clothes. This means you can travel light and concentrate fully on driving the sled and enjoying the scenery.

What equipment should I take with me on this expedition?

Once you have completed your registration, you will receive a detailed list of the clothing and accessories you will need to bring with you. We provide all the technical equipment specific to the expedition, as well as wetsuits and cold-weather footwear. In addition to the items provided for the expedition, you will need to bring warm ski clothing. Our equipment list will help you to be as prepared as possible for this expedition. You will receive it as soon as your registration is confirmed.

Will I be looking after the dogs?

The atmosphere at Jan's is warm and communal, with everyone contributing to the well-being of the group.

Will I be driving the sleigh during the expedition?

Yes, you'll have the opportunity to drive your own sled during the expedition! Several types of outings are planned to give you different experiences Solo outing: you'll drive a sled on your own, pulled by 4 dogs, giving you total autonomy and complete immersion in the wilderness Two-person outing: you'll share the experience with another participant in the sled, pulled by 6 dogs. You can alternate between driving and enjoying the scenery from the comfort of your basket.

How comfortable is the gîte?

During your stay, you will mainly be accommodated in a typical chalet. In this guesthouse situated on the edge of a fjord, in the heart of the Varangerbotn nature park. This Norwegian cabin is particularly popular for its warm, authentic atmosphere. What's more, it has a traditional sauna, perfect for relaxing after a day of adventure. You will be accommodated in single beds in a room that will accommodate your small group of 6 participants. On certain nights, you will also have the opportunity to sleep in a mountain refuge. These refuges are traditional dwellings, generally used by the Saami to look after the reindeer in summer. They are basic but functional, with bunk beds and a wood-burning stove to heat the room. These refuges offer an unusual experience in an isolated setting, with a unique chance to admire the Northern Lights far from any light pollution.
