We'll meet at our hostel at 11am, where we'll be greeted by our guide Romain. After settling in and getting to know each other, we'll set off to explore the forests and clearings of Lente. Situated between the famous Combe Laval cliffs (the highest in Europe), the Col de Carri (1200 m) and the Serre Montué (1700 m), it overlooks the Royans valley and the Valence plain. The plateau is a veritable sanctuary for the local fauna, which includes deer, chamois, foxes and sometimes even wolves. As we hike through these pastures and forests, we'll be looking for traces and clues left by the wolf, learning to decipher the signs of its discreet but fascinating presence. In the evening, after sharing a delicious dinner at our hostel, Romain, your guide, will present the programme for our stay. To enhance our understanding of the wolf, he will present a fascinating slide show entitled "The wolf: between benevolence and mistrust". Accompanied by never-before-seen videos, this captivating presentation will plunge us into the complex world of this emblematic animal. In the evening, in the stillness of the night, we may be lucky enough to hear some howling. This first day will be a real immersion in the wild world of the Vercors, an introduction to its rich, unspoilt wildlife.

We start the day with preparations for a two-day hike to the spectacular Fond d'Urle ridges. This exceptional place, with its rugged terrain and wild atmosphere, is a real gem of the region, where you can feel the raw power of nature. The route is breathtaking, with the possibility of encountering ibex, chamois and majestic birds of prey flying over the cliffs. Throughout our walk, several belvederes will offer us breathtaking views of the high plateaux of the Vercors. Each panorama reveals a little more of the grandeur of this unspoilt environment. Along the way, Romain will introduce us to a local shepherd, who will share his unique experience of living with wolves on a daily basis - an authentic and enriching encounter. At the end of the day, we'll reach a small hut nestling in the mountains, where we'll spend the night. Once we've set up camp, we'll try to listen out for the wolves, hoping to catch their howl.
DAY 3 / 3
Distance
10km
D+
200m
After carefully packing our bags, we embark on our second day of hiking through the Vercors countryside. Today we'll be walking through the territory of a wolf pack. We begin our first tracking session. Romain will teach us how to recognise footprints, droppings and other subtle clues left by the wolves, these discreet masters of the land. We'll also have a chance to pick up the camera traps set by Romain to check whether the cameras have captured any images of the wildlife, and maybe even of the wolves. Tracking will continue throughout the day, alternating between observation and the collection of clues. At around 5pm, it will already be time to say goodbye.

The excursions on offer allow you to discover the rich, wild nature of the Vercors. At the same time, naturalist studies are helping to improve our knowledge of the wild fauna, which is then needed to raise awareness among the general public.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to sleep in a private room?

At the next stage of your booking, you can select a private room for yourself or sleep in a dormitory. Simply select the option that suits you best. Simply select the option that suits you best. Do you want a private room for two people? Please contact us.

How comfortable is the hostel?

You'll be staying in a charming, comfortable inn perched on the Col de la Machine. The meals are delicious and the rooms comfortable.

Will we see wolves?

We will try to observe and listen to the wolf discreetly. The period chosen for this activity is the time when wolf cubs gather to be raised and the start of major pack movements. So it's a busy time.

Are we going to see any other animals?

In September, we're sure to hear the deer bellowing. The fauna and flora of the Vercors are extremely rich, and we could come across many species such as the Alpine marmot, chamois, griffon vulture and other birds of prey!

Is there a good time to hear wolves howling?

The wolves' breeding season generally runs from January to March, when their howls become more frequent. We organise our outings in April, June, September and October, strategically chosen by our guide. In early summer, the cubs are learning to hunt, while in early autumn they have become adults and the great pack migrations begin. Our guide recommends these specific periods for our expeditions in order to respect the tranquillity of the wolves during their reproduction while maximising the chances of hearing their impressive howls. During these expeditions, a number of nocturnal blinds are organised, notably outside the refuge during the mini raid.

⛈ What happens if the metreo is wrong?

If the weather is bad but does not represent a danger to participants during the expedition, the activity will continue. If the weather becomes dangerous, the activity will be cancelled and replaced by an alternative offered by our professional guides.

What is included in the price of a DiscoveRent shipment?

At Wildhartt, we attach particular importance to price transparency for our shipments. Our approach is based on a clear breakdown of costs, aimed at providing a better understanding of the elements included in the total amount. Here's how we allocate the percentages:

  • 30% for our guides: We believe that our experienced guides play a crucial role in the success of each activity. That's why we make sure we allocate a significant proportion to pay for their expertise and supervision.
  • 35% for accommodation and food: We consider comfortable accommodation and quality food to be essential elements of an enriching experience.
  • 10% for equipment and transport: The safety and comfort of our participants is paramount. With this part of the total amount, we can guarantee that the equipment required is in excellent condition and adequate for each activity. Transport costs also come into play when they are essential during an expedition.
  • 25% for expedition participation and running costs: These costs cover the logistical, administrative and organisational aspects of the expedition, as well as the overall management of the experience, from start to finish.

Our aim is to provide you with a trustworthy, high-quality experience, while being transparent about how the final cost of your shipment is shared. If you have any further questions about our prices, please contact us here.
