Itinerary

DAY 1 / 7
Accommodation
Auberge
We'll meet at our hostel in Kiruna at 4pm, which you can reach by taxi or bus from the station or airport (10 mins). Kiruna is Sweden's most northerly town, nestling in the heart of Swedish Lapland. Depending on your time of arrival, you can use your free time to explore the town and discover its unique architecture and rich history. At 4pm, you'll be met at the hostel by your guide and your small group of adventurers. After settling in, enjoy a free meal in one of Kiruna's typical restaurants with your group.

Wake up in Kiruna. The morning is given over to final preparations before taking the train to Abisko. Once there, we put on our snowshoes and begin our adventure by passing under the famous starting gate of the "Royal Way", a fifteen-kilometre walk through a sparse birch forest along the Abiskojokk river to the lake. Our destination for the night is the rustic but comfortable Abiskojaure hut (487 m), equipped with heating, kitchen, sauna, chopped wood and bunk beds with duvets. Before enjoying the evening around a roaring fire, we had one last effort to make: fetching water from under the ice and preparing the meal. To round off this first day, you can even relax in a traditional Swedish sauna.
DAY 3 / 7
Accommodation
Mountain hut

We cross the large valleys bordered by mountains towards Alesjaure. As we progress, the valley becomes narrower and the mountains more imposing. The birch forests we encountered on the first day give way to great white landscapes that are out of all proportion. Once we arrive at the hut, everyone goes about their daily chores before enjoying a sauna and a good meal.

Accommodation

400m
Distance

We make our way through the main valley to get back onto the Kungsleden route. This short stage of the week comes at the right time and is without difficulty, with the exception of the climb to the Tjäktja hut. Here, the vast plains give way to narrower valleys surrounded by mountains, and we'll have a picnic at the Tjäkta hut, where we'll also spend the night. In the afternoon, there will be time to relax or, for those who wish, take a short additional hike to the surrounding peaks.

Today we're heading for the Tjäktja pass, which rises to 1150 metres and is the highest point in Kungsleden. We leave the Padjelanta massif behind. The path descends into a valley and crosses a vast open area, which becomes the largest Sami camp in Sweden during the summer. The Sälka chalets can be seen in the distance. In the afternoon, we'll enjoy the refuge or set off to explore the wild and remote Nilla valley.

We continue our hike through the wide, majestic Tjäktjavagge valley, surrounded by Sweden's highest peaks, including Drakryggen and Kebnekaise. On the way, we cross a wild pass that leads to the reindeer valley and the Lapp village of Singi, uninhabited in winter. This is a relatively short stage, giving us plenty of time to make the most of our rustic and comfortable Singi hut.
DAY 7 / 7
D+

Distance

The final day will take you to Nikkaluokta through the wooded valley of the Láddjujohka river. The first two kilometres are slightly downhill, then the route is mainly flat. Don't forget to look back, as you move away from the Kebnekaise area, the sharp peaks become increasingly visible. Nikkaluokta is an important centre for the reindeer trade. You'll be able to see it, and even smell it. From Nikkaluokta, we'll take a shuttle bus to the small mining town of Kiruna, where we'll spend our last night and enjoy a final free dinner in the town, bringing us to the end of the expedition.

Being able to live adventurously and outdoors is something that's always been on my mind... After completing my 'traditional' studies and entering the world of work, I quickly realised that it wasn't for me. So, after 3 years in a design office, I changed direction and became a guide in as many disciplines as I could: mountain guide, river guide, climbing and mountain-biking instructor.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do we need?

The top priority is to pack enough thermal clothing, as well as a comfortable winter jacket and trousers for walking long distances. If necessary, clothing and footwear can be hired as an option. Given the long cold days, don't forget to bring a down jacket, two fleeces, warm waterproof gloves and woollen socks. A minimum of category 3 sunglasses and sun cream with a protection factor of 50 are also essential. To protect you from the cold, we also advise you to take hand and foot warmers, as well as a thermos flask for hot water. If you choose to take your own mountain boots or winter boots, make sure they are both warm and waterproof. A more detailed list will be sent to you well in advance of your departure.

Do I need to speak English well to take part?

Our guide Raphael speaks French and English. So you'll have no trouble communicating, whatever your language preference.

What will we eat on the trek?

During the trek, we will provide you with high-quality freeze-dried food from our selected partner, Tactical Foodpack. This type of meal is designed to be both tasty and nutritious, while being easy to transport and prepare in the wild. These meals are specially designed to meet the energy needs of adventurers and are very easy to rehydrate with hot water. So you'll have well-balanced meals adapted to the physical effort involved throughout your trek.

How comfortable are the refuges we'll be sleeping in?

You'll spend a week in comfortable refuges set in the heart of the countryside. The refuges are equipped with a wood-burning stove to keep you warm, a sauna and a fully-equipped kitchen. However, most of the refuges have no electricity or running water, so we'll be melting snow for water. Welcome to the great outdoors!

How comfortable are the rooms?

You will sleep every night in a shared room in a single bed. The beds will be equipped with blankets and pillows, but you will need to bring a meat bag for hygiene reasons.

Will there be plugs on site?

There will be plug sockets at the first and last huts. On the other nights, you'll sleep in authentic refuges with all the comforts of home, but without power sockets. We therefore recommend that you take external batteries with you.

What does the price of a Wildhartt adventure include?

At Wildhartt, we attach particular importance to price transparency for our shipments. Our approach is based on a clear breakdown of costs, aimed at providing a better understanding of the elements included in the total amount. Here's how we allocate the percentages:

  • 30% for our guides: We believe that our experienced guides play a crucial role in the success of each activity. That's why we make sure we allocate a significant proportion to pay for their expertise and supervision.
  • 35% for accommodation and food: We consider comfortable accommodation and quality food to be essential elements of an enriching experience.
  • 10% for equipment and transport: The safety and comfort of our participants is paramount. With this part of the total amount, we can guarantee that the equipment required is in excellent condition and adequate for each activity. Transport costs also come into play when they are essential during an expedition.
  • 25% for expedition participation and running costs: These costs cover the logistical, administrative and organisational aspects of the expedition, as well as the overall management of the experience, from start to finish.

Our aim is to provide you with a trustworthy, high-quality experience, while being transparent about how the final cost of your shipment is shared. If you have any further questions about our prices, please contact us here.

Can I privatise this expedition for my group?

Yes, all our expeditions can be privatised for a group already formed, on the dates of your choice.

To make your request, go to the expedition that interests you and click on "Privatise the expedition". We'll take care of the rest!

What happens if the weather is bad?

At Wildhartt, nature is our playground, whatever the conditions.
Our expeditions are designed to be experienced to the full, come sun, rain, snow or even wind. Our guides are on hand to adapt the itinerary, activities and accommodation to the prevailing conditions, to ensure the best possible experience.

⚠️ Safety exception: If conditions become truly dangerous (storm, avalanche, flood, etc.), Wildhartt may exceptionally cancel a departure.

📅 This decision will only be taken as a last resort, less than a week before departure.

  • Postpone your adventure free of charge to another departure.
