Packing your rucksack for a week's bivouac

February 19, 2023/The hiking guide

It's not always easy to pack a rucksack for a week's bivouac. What's the maximum weight? What exactly should you put in it?

Setting off for a week's bivouac requires good management of your rucksack and the right equipment. So it's very important to pack your rucksack correctly. You need to plan to take enough stuff with you, but be careful not to take too much.

Two things are very important:

  • Don't pack too much, and avoid "just in case" situations.
  • Bear in mind that you carry everything you take with you.

Where should I put what in my rucksack?

For a well-balanced rucksack, we recommend that you put the heaviest items (tent, sleeping bag, mattress, etc.) at the bottom of the rucksack, along your back.

Packing advice

We strongly recommend that you pack your rucksack using closed compartments/plastic bags. This makes it easier to find your way around the bag. If it rains heavily for a long time, you'll avoid getting your things wet.

Rucksack weight

If you're a beginner, and your muscles and knees aren't yet used to the difference in altitude and the weight of your rucksack, you'll need to consider the weight of your rucksack. You need to be careful about the load you can put on yourself. When estimating the maximum weight of a rucksack, it is advisable not to exceed 5% of your body weight.

However, for anyone, man or woman, who is used to mountains and treks, it is advisable not to exceed 15 or 20% of your own weight.

However, depending on the number of days' walking or the altitude, these factors may change. Finally, on an itinerant trek, it is advisable to take walking poles with you.
