What you will experience

Snowshoe your way through the great white valleys of Gran Bosco, one of the wildest and most isolated parks in the Italian Alps.
A unique five-day itinerant adventure accompanied by a mountain guide who will take you to the peaks of Gran Bosco.
Along the way, you'll enjoy splendid views of the Ecrins, the Rochebrune and the French and Italian valleys.
Spend your nights in rustic refuges typical of the Italian Alps, offering a friendly atmosphere and tasty local cuisine.

We'll meet at 9am in the village of Cervières, where you'll meet your group and guide: welcome, briefing and equipment check.

Once the equipment has been checked, we'll begin our adventure by following a valley bordered by the river Cerveyrette, which is often frozen at this time of year. Then we'll cross the plain of Le Bourget, where a hamlet at an altitude of 1,800 metres exudes a unique Nordic ambience. The climb up to the Col de Bousson offers magnificent views of the Rochebrune and the Italian peaks.

The descent takes us through a beautiful larch forest to the Mautino refuge, where we are warmly welcomed and treated to a delicious meal of Italian cuisine before going to bed.

After breakfast at the refuge, we pack our bags and set off on the climb to the border ridge between France and Italy. Depending on the shape of the group and the conditions, we'll continue our ascent to the summit of Dormillouse at an altitude of around 2,900 metres. At the summit, a splendid panorama awaits us, with breathtaking views of the Écrins, Rochebrune and the French and Italian valleys.

The descent, often in powder snow, takes us to the hamlet of Thures. Here we'll spend the next two nights in the Thures refuge.

After a good night's sleep in the refuge, we'll start the day with a climb to the Cima del Bosco (2,378 m), through the superb larch forest, where numerous animal tracks will punctuate our path.

Once at the summit, a beautiful direct descent awaits us, taking us back to the Thures refuge for the night.

On the fourth day, we'll take a new route back to the Mautino refuge. The quiet forest tracks offer a welcome respite after the climbs of the previous days.

We'll cross a small pass that will give us a view of the Lac Noir cirque, with a splendid panorama of the Cima del Bosco and the Cima de Dormillouse.

In the late afternoon, we arrive at the Mautino refuge, where we will spend our 4th night.

This final day begins with a short climb to the Col Saurel, followed by a long traverse at altitude. Over bumps and lakes, we'll reach the alpe du Guion (1950m) before descending a ravine of coloured rock.

If we're lucky, we'll catch a glimpse of chamois, a final souvenir of this unforgettable adventure before returning to civilisation in Cervières.

Supervision : During these 5 days you will be accompanied by Cédric: an experienced guide who will share his passion for the region with you.
Accommodation: You will spend the 4 nights in shared rooms in comfortable, authentic refuges in the Gran Bosco.
Catering: All meals are included, from the first meal in the evening to the picnic on the last day. Every day, you'll have the chance to sample the tasty cuisine of the Italian refuges.
Expedition equipment: Snowshoes and walking poles are provided for each participant. A safety kit (avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe) is also provided by your guide.

What level should you expect

Level 3
  • You should be able to walk 6 hours a day for 5 days, with an average climb of 650m.
  • You are able to carry your rucksack (max 8kg) on the daily hikes (no porterage provided).
  • You're looking for a snowshoeing adventure with days of roaming and nights in a refuge.
  • You want to reach snow-covered summits while discovering the wild nature of the peaks in winter.

What equipment do we need?

Once your registration has been confirmed, we'll send you a personalised roadbook for your trip containing all the practical information you need, including a list of equipment you'll need to take.

How comfortable are the rooms?

The refuges offer a certain level of comfort: you will sleep in a single bed in a room shared with the other participants. Blankets are provided, but it is advisable to bring a sleeping bag for reasons of hygiene. There will be heating, showers and electrical sockets.

Will I have to carry a rucksack on the various hikes?

Yes, as we'll be roaming, you'll have to carry your rucksack on the hikes, as we don't plan to transfer your luggage. However, as we will be sleeping in the same refuge on the 2nd and 3rd nights, you will be able to leave most of your belongings there and carry a light rucksack on the hike on the 3rd day.

What happens if there's no snow?

We are first and foremost hikers, and when the snow runs out we still ensure the departure of our trips. The atmosphere and the winter light are just right, and even if you have to wear snowshoes for a while or do without them sometimes, the scenery is still splendid. So make sure you have good walking shoes.

⛈ What happens if the metreo is wrong?

If the weather is bad but does not represent a danger to participants during the expedition, the activity will continue. If the weather becomes dangerous, the activity will be cancelled and replaced by an alternative offered by our professional guides.

What is included in the price of a DiscoveRent shipment?
