We meet at 9.30am at the Col de Menée. After organising the rucksacks for our tour, we can finally set off on our adventure towards the mountain pastures and crests of Jiboui. From here, the view of the Vercors and Dévoluy is superb, and the history of the site is astonishing. A descent through forests and pastures takes us from one bank of the Sareymond stream to the other, to the Sappet waterfall.

We are now in the Diois, south of the Vercors, and the vegetation is changing, as are the habitats of the small hamlets we pass through: Les Nonnières and Bénevise, the stop-off point for our first stage.

The second day begins with a gradual ascent through the lavender fields to the magnificent sheepfolds at Tussac. A small summit popular with Chamois allows us to discover the cliffs of the incredible Archiane cirque, home to Vultures and Bearded Vultures. We'll then take one of the many 'pas' in the Vercors to descend into the welcoming Vallon de Combeau, where we'll spend the night.

On this stage, a warm-up will take us to an unspoilt valley surrounded by beautiful limestone cliffs. On this third day, we'll be walking through the heart of the largest nature reserve in mainland France! Crossing the valley will take us to a small, seemingly insignificant summit, offering an incredible 360° panorama.

Vast stretches of unspoilt wilderness then open up before us: as we contemplate these rolling plateaux, our wanderings will take us to our final refuge: the Chaumailloux sheepfold, a place steeped in history, facing the "Mont inaccesible", the cradle of mountaineering.

Activity time

After a night and breakfast in the hills, we'll take an even wilder route back. We'll follow the ridges, passing the tête chevalière and its impressive ravines.

After a descent through the alpine pastures, a final ridge section will be the grand finale facing the Ecrins and the Dévoluy, taking us gently back to the Col de Menée, where we will end our adventure.

Frequently asked questions

Are there sources of drinking water available in the refuges, or is it necessary to purify the river water?

You'll have easy access to drinking water thanks to the many springs your guide will take you to. Water sources are available near the mountain huts, and there are several refreshment points along the way where you can fill up your water bottle.

Is there any essential equipment to bring?

Once you've signed up, you'll receive a full list of equipment within a few weeks. You'll also have the opportunity to talk to the guide well before departure to ask any questions you may have and have plenty of time to prepare.

Do the hostel and gîtes offer drinks at extra cost, and do they accept credit cards or cash?

When you're there, it's best to carry cash. Credit cards are rarely accepted in refuges, and payments are almost always made in cash. If you need to buy water, drinks or small extras, make sure you have some euros in cash before you leave. Ideally, you should withdraw some money in town before arriving in the mountains if you want to buy these little extras. However, everything else is taken care of for you!

Is there a way to recharge phones and other electronic devices in the gîtes and refuge?

On the first two days, you can use the sockets available in the gîtes to recharge your appliances. Don't forget to bring a portable battery for the last day if you want to recharge your phone, as there will be no electricity on the third night in the sheepfold.

Are there any technical or vertiginous passages on the route that could pose a problem for people prone to vertigo?

The expedition is accessible, provided that you are capable of walking for several hours with a change in altitude. If you're afraid of heights, some sections of the route along the ridges may be a little tricky, but there are no technical or dangerous sections, so you can enjoy this immersion in the wild, unspoilt landscapes of the Vercors to the full.

Can I privatise this expedition for my group?

Yes, all our expeditions can be privatised for a group already formed, on the dates of your choice.

To make your request, go to the expedition that interests you and click on "Privatise the expedition". We'll take care of the rest!

Are instalment payment options available?

Yes, absolutely! At checkout, you can choose Alma to pay for your booking in 2, 3 or 4 instalments. Just select Alma during checkout and follow the instructions. It’s simple, fast, and secure.
